Memorial Day was created to honor the many American men and women who died in military service. Memorial Day is always commemorated in the U.S. on the last Monday in May, this year Memorial Day is on Monday, May 25. Every Memorial Day, families and communities across the nation take time to honor those who made the ultimate sacrifice in service to our nation. Americans observe this special holiday in different ways. Learn about some of the Traditions and Activities from the resource website PBS.org.

Red Poppies are associated with those who died during wartime since World War I. In the U.S., people wear the red poppy on Memorial Day to honor those who died trying to protect our country.

The Red Poppy is not a symbol of blood, death, or support for war. Instead, poppies were the only flowers that grew in war-torn battlefields. When the countrysides were nothing but mud and devastation, poppy flowers sprouted up and flourished. The sight of the red poppies inspired one Canadian soldier, Colonel John McCrae, to pen a poem in May 1915:

During Bear Block on Friday, March 13th, students enjoyed an Eat & Explore event in celebration of National PI Day 3.14. Students participated during their Bear Block and experience the many ways Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Math (STEAM) use this fascinating irrational number and how it can be found throughout our lives.

Haikus are known for their ability to paint a vivid picture in just a few words. A practice of artistic discipline, their minimal nature, forces you to pare down to only the essentials—making each word, or even syllable, count.

At the WRHS Learning Commons, students can socialize with their friends, play board and video games, and develop critical thinking skills while surrounded by books, librarians and a real world of knowledge.

No-Shave November is an initiative where participants stop shaving to raise awareness and funds for cancer education and research. In the WRHS Learning Commons there will be a "library-themed" event for the month of November in which we display books with mustaches or beards, participate in a "No-Shave November" challenge, and promote "beard-related" reading by suggesting books with bewhiskered characters.
