Our goal for this project is to make it easier for WRHS students to find books of interest, allowing them to be more proactive in their choices, and increase the circulation of our fictional titles from the previous year.
Create signage to display each genre and PROMOTE!
An important aspect to the acceptance of any change is to present a positive perspective as to why this change is needed. Fortunately, the Genrefication Project is a student driven project that allows them to be more self-sufficient and independent in their choices. A perspective that most young adults appreciate and as educators respectfully support.
To facilitate student independence of choice, the library fiction collection is NOW well marked with signs showing genre category sections that match the Demco® Silhouette Genre Subject Classification Labels we used on the books.
Gail Cornwall (2018) suggests in her MindShift article How Genrefication Makes School Libraries More Like Bookstores, "Illustrated signs demarcating each section and color-coded spine labels provide students with visual cues that render them more self-sufficient."
For those genre classifications in which preprinted signs were not available, we made our own.
New books are placed on open shelf areas within the genre section or on top of lower bookcases so that students can easily see what's new in their genre of interest.
We are promoting our NEW Fiction Collection with an EAT and EXPLORE session for all teachers, staff and students when we return from winter break. They can come by during lunches and take a look at "What's NEW for 2020 in the WRHS Learning Commons."
Next Steps - Measuring Success
Since this is also a focus for my Student Learning Objective goals. I will be comparing circulation data by quarter and comparing this with last year's numbers.
