2019 ENERGETIC EARTH: ROAD MAP
Skills Introduction/Routines
Unit 1
Skill Review: Scientific Method, Variable Identification, Data collection, Data Analysis, CER, Basic Measuring/Tools
Unit 1-(Textbook Chapters 1,2)
- I Can Identify Matter vs. Non-matter and Measure Matter using appropriate tools and units. (Volume, Mass and Density)
- I Can Design a controlled experiment, identify variables and present the data using a CER method (Claim, Evidence, Reasoning)
Thermal Energy Powers Earth’s Systems
Units 2-6
Earth’s Interior, Earth’s Oceans, Earth’s Atmosphere, Earth’s Human Habitat
Unit 2-(Textbook Chapters 3,10)
- I Can Recognize that heat is a form of energy and that temperature change results from adding or taking away heat from a system.
- I Can Explain the effect of heat on particle motion by describing what happens to particles during a change in phase.
- I Can Recognize that a substance has a melting and boiling point that is independent of the amount of the sample.
Unit 3-(Textbook Chapters 3,10)
- I Can Differentiate between Radiation, Convection and Convection
(How Heat is Transferred Through Earth’s Systems)
- I Can Give Examples of how heat moves in predictable ways, moving from warmer objects to cooler ones until they reach Thermal Equilibrium. I Can Apply these ideas to design, construct and test a thermal device to keep heat in or keep heat out.
Unit 4-Supplemental Readings/Videos
- I Can Explain how energy Earth’s core affects global thermal/heat patterns in the Geosphere,(tectonic plates/landforms/convection currents in Earth’smantle shapes earth)
Unit 5-Supplemental Readings/Videos
- I Can Explain how energy from the sun affects global temperature patterns in the Hydrosphere (Deep and Surface ocean currents regulate global temperature/weather patterns)
Unit 6-Supplemental Readings/Videos, Study Jams Climate and Weather
- I Can Explain how energy from the sun affects global temperature patterns in the Atmosphere(Differentiate between weather and climate) and Develop a Model of the cycling of water in this system.
- I Can Interpret Data on humans impact on global temperatures (deforestation, carbon emissions, etc)
Forces/ Energy Power Motion of Objects on Earth
Units 7-9
Energy comes in many forms and converts from one form to another, Newton’s Laws help us to predict how mass and force are related
Unit 7-(Textbook Chapter 9)
- I Can Describe the Relationship between KE and PE, and Describe Conversions from one form to another.
- I Can Interpret graphs/collect data on how the variables KE, mass and speed of an object are related.
- I Can Develop a Model explaining how distance between objects relates to potential energy. (gravitational, magnetic, static electricity)
Unit 8-(Textbook Chapter 9)
- I Can Identify types of energy, and how they convert (transfer) from one type to another, without being destroyed.
Unit 9 -(Textbook Chapter 6)
- I Can Describe how balanced and unbalanced forces and mass affect moving things during a collision. (Newton’s Laws-Momentum and Collisions)
Chemical Energy Powers Life on Earth
Units 10-12
Building Blocks of Matter, Cycling/Recycling of Matter on Earth
Unit 10 -(Textbook Chapters 2,3,4)
- I Can Describe the difference between Mixtures and Pure Substances (Elements/Compounds, Atoms vs. Molecules)
- I Can Describe the difference between Physical and Chemical Changes and Can Explain how mass is conserved in a closed system.
- I Can Plan and Conduct an Experiment to test how reacting substances (chemical changes) are related to thermal energy released/absorbed. (Exo/Endothermic) as bonds are broken and remade
Unit 11-(Supplemental Readings/Videos)
- I Can Recognize that matter is cycled through a system-Food Webs, Food Chains, Photosynthesis, Cellular Respiration, Types of Food Molecules
Unit 12 -(Textbook Chapters 11,12,13)
- I Can Identify Elements on the Periodic Table and Can Explain the basic way it is organized, and what information it provides about the atoms.
