Developmentally appropriate transition skills that should be acquired by the end of 8th grade science (Sept-June)
1. Lab Report Communication Skills:
Quantitative/Qualitative Data Collection
- Independent Collection of data during Lab experiment
- Development of Data Chart- Organization of data from experimentation
Analyzing Data:
- Creating graphs on paper and Google Sheets from data sets
- Identification of dependent/independent variable and appropriate X Y labels
- Extrapolation/Interpolation of unknown data using trendline (Formula-google graph)
- identifying trends in data sets
Writing effective conclusions-CER
- Write an appropriate claim to a testable question
- Present Quantitative Data (Raw Data, Analysis) and Qualitative Data as evidence.
- Integrate Reasoning to explain the science “why” the evidence supports/does not support the claim
- Utilizing a variety of transition phrases to link evidence to claim in an effective manner. (The data shows, Furthermore, Consequently, etc. )
Proper Mechanics/Grammar/Proofreading Strategies
- Complete sentences with appropriate capitalization, spelling and punctuation
- Use Template for organization of CER
- Read in 1” voice as initial proof-reading strategy
2. Organizational strategies
- Organized locker-with limited visits (planning ahead for supplies)
- Homework strategy-writing homework in planner, bringing homework daily (folder)
- Utilize science binder, folder system, accordion file: keeping notes, assessments, activities for reference materials to prepare for midterm/final assessments
4. Utilizing formulas to solve for unknown variables
- Use of differentiation techniques for non-algebra students (ratio triangle to help solve unknowns)
5. Identification of key concepts from text/videos
- Exposure to different note taking/outlining strategies demonstrated (4 square, Q Notes, Picture Notes)
6. Practice reading rubrics/directions (x2 before you ask for help) for projects/lab reports
- Promote student self assessment , independence and transparency in grading
7. Homework completion during non-school hours
- Increase rigor and the ability to plan, and complete multiple subjects of homework in an evening
