I believe ALL students will learn if they are engaged, if their needs are met and if they have accessible ways to interact with a concept and show their learning. As students experience success in their learning, their confidence and influence will grow. They will become leaders in our classroom and school learning community, leaders who are thinkers and problem solvers.
"Education is not the learning of facts, but the training of the mind to think." ~ Albert Einstein
I believe all students, families and staff belong to a community of learners. All members of that community have a right to a safe and caring learning environment. This is built through clear and consistent classroom procedures and expectations, as well as ensuring EVERY student believes their input is valued in classroom discussions and activities.
Kindness, acceptance, understanding, communication and support are integral components of our learning community and are guiding principles in all my classroom planning and decision making.
We will build our classroom community through a variety of interactive learning activities, concentrating on the skills of teamwork and problem-solving which are integral components of engineering and scientific inquiry.
Students should be able to engage with, interact with and represent their learning of a concept in multiple different ways. A classroom is composed of many individuals with unique learning styles and needs.
Every student has the right to learn in the way that is most meaningful and effective for them. And ALWAYS starting from a place of strength rather than deficit.
Learning is the goal. So in designing a course, a unit or a lesson, I start with that goal and work backwards.
What does learning look like for this concept?
What are the various ways that learning can be shown by students?
In what ways can students interact with the concept?
How can students be inspred to engage with and come on the learning journey with me?
