I am a GEEK for learning. I have always enjoyed the process of learning, wanting to learn about and be involved in as many different things as possible. My young life involved moving from school to school. By the time I was in grade 6, I was entering my 6th school in 4 different cities and 2 different provinces. I met a lot of people from many different backgrounds and walks of life during that time.
In highschool I was on sports teams, played multiple instruments in school and regional bands, joined the Amnesty International Club, played various lead roles in the school drama productions, competed in French language speech competitions, and volunteered in my community. I graduated with honours and a concentration in French Immersion.
I continued my learning journey at McGill University in Montreal, Quebec where I studied the sciences including chemistry, genetics and phisiology. I also learned 2 additional languages, Spanish and Russian, and dipped my toes into a wide varity of other subject areas, such as math, anthropology, sociology, literature, linguistics, music history and compostition.
With a Bachelor of Arts and 2/3 of a Bachelor of Science under my belt, it started to become clear to me that teaching was my path. So I volunteered for a few months at a K-12 rural school in Ontario to try it out. And by the following fall I was heading to the University of Lethbridge to pursue a Bachelor of Education with a concentration in Science and a minor in second language instruction.
My first teaching job took me all the way north to Fort McMurray. I taught grade 7 and 8 Science as well as Introductory French and Computer Skills. Fort McMurray became my home for many years. I got married in Fort McMurray, had 3 babies in Fort McMurray and became a first time home-owner there as well. I learned a lot from this amazing northern community!
McGill University lecture theatre where I attended many, many lectures.
My new little family then moved to a farm in the Wetaskiwin area. We grew by an additional 4 littles and many, many animals. We added Dexters and Black Angus, English Large Black Pigs, General Abe (our beloved guard donkey), multiple generations of barn cats, and the occasional batch of laying hens to our little farm family. New adventures, new learning. I even learned how to drive a tractor. Those bales don't move themselves!
When my last baby was 3 years old, I decided to find my own classroom again. That's when I joined the Queen E family of Royals. In the past 7 years, I have taught a wide range of grades and subjects, which perfectly reflects my learning journey.
There have been lots of other learning adventures in there too, but I'll leave those stories for another time.
HAPPY LEARNING!
