About the Program:
Harmony SEL is an SEL program for Pre-K to 6 grade students, accessible online and at no cost. With Harmony’s resources, tools, strategies, and product training and support, you can foster the knowledge, skills, and attitudes students need to develop healthy identities and relationships. Further your SEL implementation with Inspire: Leading In Learning’s training on the intersections of SEL, equity, academic integration, and adult SEL.
Harmony SEL is a curriculum that is available through the Harmony Online Learning Portal. Here educators have access to the Everyday Practices of Meet Up and Buddy Up to embed SEL throughout the school day and five units to explicitly teach SEL skills. Results from recent evaluations have shown that Harmony’s SEL approach is effective in improving the classroom environment, positive relationships with others, and academic achievement.
Focus on Relationship Building
Harmony targets the development of SEL skills through relationship-building activities. By focusing on peer relationship processes we can contribute to students’ academic success. The program consists of structured activities, lessons, games, and stories designed to promote learning environments that are inclusive and collaborative to support the development of healthy peer relationships.
Background
Developed and researched at Arizona State University (ASU), Harmony was first introduced into elementary schools in 2008. Researchers at Arizona State University identified practical methods for reducing relational conflicts in the classroom while increasing student confidence, relationship skills and academic excellence. Incorporating best practices developed through their research, they created Harmony to achieve these goals by teaching understanding and empathy through classroom discussions, stories, activities, and lessons.
Development of Five Units
Using age-appropriate materials, teachers facilitate lessons and activities that enhance students’ communication and relationship-building skills. The five units of Harmony are Being My Best Self, Valuing Each Other, Communicating with Each Other, Learning from Each Other, and Supporting our Community. In addition, Harmony has a pre-unit, Building Community-The First 10 Days with Hamony SEL, to help teachers build relationships in the first 10 days of school with Harmony. Each of the Harmony units address an important need in schools to create positive environments that support the student success. Schools can use the five units and the pre-unit for school-wide activities and celebrations
Whole Person Movement
Harmony is now part of a growing movement to offer tools, practices and curricula that improve classroom learning and student well-being by placing greater attention on the “whole child” or “whole person.” As one Harmony teacher said, “The emotions connected to learning are inseparable.” Harmony creates opportunities for young people, as well as adults, to practice skills that build healthy relationships, increase emotional regulation, and improve communication with others.
