Enrichment Opportunities

Special Education’s role relating to the intellectually gifted student is similar to that for any other identified student. A student identified as Intellectually Gifted through the IPRC and IEP mechanism is entitled to the support that other students receive. This support can take the form of advocating for accommodations to assignments and or helping to provide extracurricular or alternative activities.

Whenever possible, classroom teachers are encouraged to provide opportunities for gifted students to try innovative methods. Students are encouraged to participate in a wide variety of school activities that develop passion for a subject area and enrich the learning experience.

Some unique opportunities facilitated by groups in the larger community are: Waterloo Unlimited, Shad Valley, AP programs, Queen’s University E=MC2 Enrichment Program, University of Toronto Enrichment, and Computer Science Camps. Information regarding these enrichment opportunities can be provided by a student’s SERT or by the community group coordinator directly.
