Glossary of Terms

ACE: Alternative Continuum of Education - Programming for students with Intellectual and Development Disabilities not working toward an OSSGD.

AT: Assistive Technology - Any technology or equipment used to support learning (e.g. speech to text, text to speech, noise-cancelling headphones, reading guides, flexible seating equipment, sensory toys/ fidgets.

EdTech: Educational Technology - Digital technology used to facilitate learning (e.g. Google Classroom, GSuite for Education, D2L, Flipgrid, Jamboard)

EQAO: Education Quality and Accountability Office - A Crown agency of the government of Ontaro responsible for mandating and regulating standardized tests in literacy and numeracy.

IEP: Individual Education Plan - A document listing your child's strengths, needs, accommodations, and services provided to support their learning in the classroom. An IPRC is not required to implement an IEP for a student.

IPRC: Identification Placement & Review Committee - This committee includes your child's Principal, SERT, classroom teacher, school clinicians, and key support staff. This committee identifies exceptional pupils for placement in special education programming within the school board.

OSSD: Ontario Secondary School Diploma - To obtain a secondary school diploma a student must complete 30 credits, 40 community service hours and meet the EQAO grade 10 literacy requirement.

SEA: Special Education Equipment Amount - Funding from the government of Ontario given to school boards to purchase technology and equipment for special education students.

SEAC: Special Education Advisory Council - An advisory committee comprised of various community stakeholders that provides input into special education programming in your school board.

SERT: Special Education Resource Teacher
