Monday's Eclipse

As you likely know, we in North Carolina get to experience a partial solar eclipse this coming Monday.  Unfortunately, the laws of the universe do not take the Woods bell schedule into account when scheduling this very rare event:  the eclipse is expected to peak at 3:15, just after school lets out. For those who are able, we recommend you pick up your student at regular time and head directly to a local park and enjoy! At Woods, we will provide certified eclipse-viewing glasses for each student.  We will also provide careful instruction about avoiding absolutely any direct viewing of the eclipse without the glasses. The eclipse begins at about 1:58 that day in our area, so we will have time to experience partially the partial eclipse for a while before we dismiss. Students in our after-school program will have their school-issued glasses and will be able to enjoy the eclipse at its peak.  The eclipse ends around 4:28.

Our Book Fair is this Thursday and Friday! We are so excited to partner with McIntyre's Books for the Fair. McIntyre's will be setting up shop in our Great Room, and will have books appealing to kindergarteners through adults, and other fun goodies on hand! We will be visiting on Friday at 11:30am.

Books will start at $9, with most ranging between $10 and $20 - cash, check (made to McIntyre's Books) and card are all accepted. Students who do not bring money to shop will be able to browse and make a wish list of books that catch their eye.

In addition to the class visit, students will have the opportunity to shop both days before school starting at 8a, and during lunch. Students can also shop after school until 3:30p on Thursday. Parents are also welcome to shop in-person during those times. McIntyre's will be donating 20% of sales to our Annual Fund!

We do need VOLUNTEERS to help with the Fair. If you are able to help, please sign up HERE. You can email any questions to Jessica Oliver at joliver@woodscharter.org.

1/31/24 Valentine's Day
Valentine's Day is quickly approaching and 4th graders love to use this day to celebrate friendship. In Second Step, the students have focused on empathy and spreading kindness, and Valentine's Day is the perfect time to put this into practice. Students are invited to bring a small trinket or note for their classmates, and they will also have a chance to write notes of kindness to share in the afternoon. We do ask the following:

- If your child is bringing a small trinket, please make sure there are enough for the whole class.

- No edible treats, please! Alternatives include, but are not limited to squishies, slap bracelets, mini slimes, Valentine's notes, or fidgets.

- If your child does NOT have permission to partake in a teacher provided snack, please contact me directly.

Class List: Beckett, Addie, Alexander, Paige, Mayzie, Baldwin, Liam, Claire, Pierce, Naomi, Zarah, Riley, Bradley, Kiran, Jasper, Leah, Phionah

1/29/24 Progress reports and reading interest surveys are coming home today. Will you please go over and complete the reading survey with your child, sign the back of it, and return it by Friday? This would be greatly appreciated.

GI Virus Outbreak update: 1/26/24

Unfortunately, we have had an unusually high number of students develop symptoms of stomach cramps, vomiting and diarrhea the end of last week. This does appear to be a virus which has also been circulating in the community at large.  We have increased cleaning protocols at school and enforced handwashing to the best of our ability in attempt to keep spread to a minimum. Please monitor your child for symptoms and notify the nurse if you believe they have been affected.

Due to the highly contagious nature of this particular illness, if your child is exhibiting symptoms of stomach pain, please err on the side of caution and keep them home. And if your child has experienced vomiting, in this particular case, we also ask that you keep them home for 48 hours following the last episode of vomiting before sending them back to school. We are sending well wishes to everyone who has been impacted by this virus. If you have any questions, please contact the school nurse Kimberly Houston khouston@woodscharter.org

Week of 11/7/23

GOAL MET! THANK YOU!!! Please consider supporting Fields' Flamingos.
I have a temporary free trial for IXL. I would like to provide our flamingos with this tool for the rest of the school year. This program not only offers adaptive learning for each of my students individual needs, but also includes a great online teacher toolkit to guide me in assisting my students in 1-1 and in small group sessions. IXL includes diagnostics, growth data charts, intervention tools, enrichment tools, and of course learning games! This program directly links to our current math curriculum. I can even assign independent practice in IXL based on the exact lesson I taught that day. The IXL math program would be an amazing upgrade for the flamingos. My fiends and family already have us half way there. Your support will help our Flamingos fly high!

Important Dates

Nov. 10th - NO SCHOOL for students

Nov. 17th - End of Trimester I

Nov. 20th - 24th - Thanksgiving Break, NO SCHOOL

The students have so much fun with this project. It is a great way for them to show their creativity and knowledge. This project will require research! It will wrap up our geology unit. I will post a document with each flamingos name and the name of his/her mountain under homework, on Monday. Your kiddo should come home with the document linked above in his/her homework folder on Monday as well.

The Harvest Day Parade is Tuesday, October 31 at 8:35.
Your child will receive his/her character sheets on Tuesday. Your child should complete the sheets based on a book he/she has read. Your child MUST bring the book with him/her on Tuesday, if in costume.

Dear Elementary School Families,

We are in the process of developing a new Lunch Bunch program for Elementary School Students. Lunch Bunch is a small social skills group that meets at lunch time, once a week, from 10:30 – 11:00am, or 11:00-11:30am outside, in the great room, or in room 129 (weather depending.) We will eat lunch, get to know each other, share stories, practice appropriate social skills, and learn about/practice interpersonal communication skills. The goal is that this will be a fun time for students to interact and learn about social communication, interoception, and sharing perspectives. Lunch bunch is informal and totally voluntary. Please let me know if you do NOT want your child to attend.  Additionally, please let me know if your child has any allergies.  Feel free to reach out with any questions!

Kind regards,

We are holding our Third Annual Walk To School Day on Wednesday, October 4th. For those who are new and a refresher for those who aren't . . . students and faculty (who opt to) meet at the pavilion in Great Meadow Park in Briar Chapel before school starts. Cotton meets us there upon completion of his 10ish mile walk from his house and we head to Woods together on foot. It is a joyful morning and great way to start the day.

The buses drop students at the park that morning, and we encourage parents to drop their students off there, but some students will be dropped off at school. For those students at school, we will arrange holding places for them until the crowd makes it here around 8:20.

If you want to join us in walking, please do - the more of you there, the more fun it will be!

A Note From Our Art Teacher, Mrs. Larusso: Hi everyone,

I would like to invite any family that wants to share a cultural art experience with their student’s class to reach out to me, especially if it is not something that would work well in your classrooms (messy, too many materials etc…).

I would love to have them come in and share with me and the students.

Thank you!

Sensory Science

Ready to experiment!? I created this class for kids who love science and sensory satisfaction! We will complete multiple experiments each session. Many of our experiments will be sensory satisfying. In fact, each session we will make a different type of slime or other sensory engaging experiment. Paired with this, each time we meet, we will conduct various other experiments that will result in foaming, bubbling, color changes and more! So if your kid(s) like to mix, measure, squish, squash and stir, this is the place to be!

Walking Program
If you want to volunteer, here is the Walking Program Link

- high heat index: anything above 96, elementary-aged students are not to be outside. We will use the gym from (2:00/2:10-2:50) Intervention block makes this tricky for 4th graders, so we would use their PE time as walking time.

- hot, but under 95: We will walk the back 40 so the kids have access to consistent shade under the council house and from the trees

- rainy days: We will walk the building if the field is wet at your regular times. If the rain is coming down, we will use the gym from (2:00/10-2:50) Intervention block makes this tricky for 4th graders so we would use their PE time as walking time.
