T1 Classroom Action

Week 13: Geometry continues! This week we talked triangles, quadrilaterals, and symmetry. Students cut and folded shapes while talking about angles and comparing sides. We also performed our first reader's theater during intervention and enrichment time. The kiddos did great and really enjoyed putting on a mini play. Also pictured below are some random WWW (Weird & Wonderful Wednesday) pics.

Week 12: Geology ends and geometry begins! We have kicked off our geometry unit by sorting and identifying different types of triangles and quadrilaterals based on attributes. During this process students discuss types of lines (parallel, perpendicular, equal lengths) and types of angles (obtuse, acute, right).

Week 11: Character Day for the Harvest Parade and Hidden Fractions Drawings
Fourth grade spent time exploring different types of rocks and minerals. The students sorted rocks and minerals by color, texture and size. They also attempted to identify if a rock was igneous, sedimentary, and metamorphic.
Geology rocks!

Week 10: Grandparents Day!

Week 10: Native Americans of North Carolina Learning Experience
4th graders were joined by Ms. Tina Smith from the LAM Museum of Anthropology in Winston Salem. The students took part in a presentation that explored life as a Native American during the Paleoindian, Archaic, and Woodland time periods. 4th grade also had some first hand experience playing games common for children during these time periods. This also provided the students with yet another opportunity to expand their knowledge before finalizing their Native Americans of North Carolina slideshows.

Week 9: I was a slacker on pics this week. Feel free to read about our learning goals for the month under the "Current Learning Goals" tab.

Week 8's snapshots include:

Week 7: We are learning about the "ologies" as we move into geology. I snapped a couple pics of the kiddos sorting images and questions into the different "ologies" they support.

MORE FRACTIONS! This week we have used a variety of manipulatives and methods for finding and creating equivalent fractions. We used beads to show the difference between when a number line represents 1 whole versus multiple wholes as we begin to explore improper fractions.

Lastly, we have some Freedom Friday pics and narrative shares on the back 40.

Week 6: I hope you enjoyed our “Welcome to North Carolina” presentations. These presentations integrated mapping skills, NC knowledge, and animal adaptations units all together. The kids put forth great effort and became quite the experts on their region!

Week 5: This week we played math games to strengthen our understanding of counting fractions, finding equivalent fractions, and comparing fractions. We used dice to determine our numerator when counting fractions on a numberline. We also had a pizza party! Students had to make equivalent slice trades in order to complete their pizzas.

Week 4: FRACTIONS!!! Fractions are often an intimidating task so we kicked off this unit with some fraction fun! We played fraction bingo and created fractions less than, greater than, or equal to our partners' fraction in a sensory satisfying way! Also pictured below are some "Weird and Wonderful Wednesday" shares and our newest dismissal time game, "Flaming Flamingo!"  Enjoy.

Week 3: This week we played a game called Dots. We connect the dots to create a rectangle and then multiply multiples of 10 to calculate our score. We also practiced using latitude and longitude to pinpoint a variety of US capitals and added important landmarks to our NC maps.

Week 2: This week in math we used the rainbow method to find factor pairs and create a variety of rectangles representing the same area. In literacy, we continued to focus on personal narratives and illustrated a thought bubble filled with images that represent us.

Week one is done! Thanks for a great week. Please enjoy a few snapshots of our math games, brown bag shares, Theraputic Thursday, and more!
