Consistent attendance contributes positively to the success of any student. Students at WCS are expected to practice discipline and responsibility by being in attendance each day, except for personal or family illness, bereavement, medical/dental appointments, or an unusual circumstance. It is important for parents to communicate and work with their child’s teacher in order to get missing work completed in a timely manner. Missing in person instruction may contribute to difficulty for future learning.
To avoid tardiness your children will be in their seats when the 8:15 a.m. bell rings. Students arriving after 8:30 a.m. should obtain a tardy slip from the office.
Please do not send children to school with any contagious or communicable illness or skin rash. Students with constant coughs, sneezing, sore throats, red eyes, or fever should not be sent to school. You will be asked to pick up your child if his/her temperature is abnormal. In order for a child to return to school, their temperature must be normal without the assistance of medication for a period of 24 hours.
When a child is absent from school, we ask you to call, use the WCS App, or email that absence into the office. As a safety precaution we contact every absentee each morning, if the parent has not called or emailed. Your call or email will save the school time and money.
Excused Absences: When it is necessary for a child to miss school due to personal or family illness, bereavement, medical/dental appointments, or an unusual circumstance, please notify the office. All make-up work for excused absences must be completed in a timely fashion. One day is allowed for each day absent unless other arrangements have been made. Late work will be accepted for partial credit up to 5 school days beyond days allowed.
It is necessary for all early dismissals to be cleared through the school office.
Planned Absences: When it is known in advance that a student will be absent for reasons other than described above, a Request for Excused Absence form must be submitted to the office at least one week in advance. The teacher will determine if work missed during the absence can be provided in advance or will be provided upon the student’s return to school. If work is provided in advance, it will be due upon the student’s return to school. Missed projects will be due and tests will be taken upon a student’s return to school unless a previous date has been determined by the teacher. If work is provided upon a student’s return, one day is allowed for each day absent, not to exceed five (5) days, unless other arrangements have been made. A maximum of 5 days of planned absences per school year will be allowed. Any days beyond 5 will be considered unexcused. If the parent/guardian believes extenuating circumstances exist to have more than 5 days planned of absences be excused, they may request a meeting with administration to discuss the reason for additional absence days to be excused.
Unexcused Absences: An unexcused absence is an absence that is not for personal or family illness, bereavement, medical/dental appointments, an unusual circumstance, or an approved planned absence. One day is allowed for each day absent unless other arrangements have been made. Late work will be accepted for partial credit up to 5 school days beyond days allowed. Major projects/reports that were due during the absence will be due upon return to school, but will be graded as late work. Tests and quizzes will be taken upon return to school, or a date determined by the teacher.
Excessive Absences: Five or more unexcused absences per trimester is considered excessive and may result in dismissal from the school. No refunds are made because of absences.
If excessive excused absences result in a significant decline in a student’s academic performance, then a meeting may be called with parents and administration to discuss the impact on the student’s grades and/ or academic probation.
