The GI Bill offers a variety of benefits to help pay for college, including:
Tuition and fees
The Post-9/11 GI Bill can cover the full cost of public and in-state tuition and fees, and caps rates for private and foreign schools.
Housing allowance
A monthly housing allowance (MHA) is based on the cost of living where the school is located. The MHA is paid directly to the bank account the recipient sets up for direct deposit with the VA.
Books and supplies
A stipend is available for books and supplies. The stipend is paid directly to the bank account the recipient sets up for direct deposit with the VA.
Moving assistance
A one-time payment may be available to help with moving from a rural area to go to school.
Transferability
The Post-9/11 GI Bill can be transferred to eligible immediate family members, such as a spouse or children.
The GI Bill is available to military members who served on active duty on or after September 11, 2001. The amount of benefits a recipient receives increases the longer they serve, and the benefits do not expire.
