College Admission Criteria
The most important factor in getting admitted to the college of your choice is your high school grades. But colleges also look at the courses you took. If you got all A’s during high school but avoided challenging courses, it counts against you. For example, it’s better to get a B in AP calculus than an A in consumer math so you can pad your GPA.
Schools may also consider:
Class rank: This is where you stand in relation to the other students in your class. In addition to admissions, it can also be important for certain scholarships.
Standardized test scores: In Kentucky, the most often used standardized test is the ACT. The SAT is also widely used. The COMPASS is often used by two-year schools and technical schools. Your scores may also be important when it comes to financial aid.
Essay: Most often used by nonprofit private schools, essays let admissions counselors learn more about you as an individual and get a feel for your writing ability. Here are some tips on essay writing.
Letters of recommendation: Letters from teachers, counselors and other adults will give the admissions staff a more-rounded picture of you as a student and person.
Interview: Like essays, interviews are most often associated with nonprofit private colleges. It gives someone representing the school — a staff member or a graduate — a chance to talk with you one–on–one, either in person or on the phone. It also gives you a chance to ask questions about the school.
Extracurricular activities and volunteer work: The clubs, teams and community work you're involved in tell the school a lot about you as a person. Generally, it’s better to do a few things in—depth than so many things you can’t give any of them the time they deserve.
Nearly every college and university across the United States uses the Common Application as part of the admissions process.
The Common App opens August 1st every year. For early action opportunities, most schools require submission by November 1st; however, the standard due date is January 1st each academic year.
For support on how to make YOUR application stand out, check out the buttons below:
Brag sheets are a way for you to help me write letters of recommendation. These forms give me more insight into who you are outside of school and your interests. Fill out these forms, and share them with me when you ask me for a letter of recommendation! Help me write a personal and detailed letter of recommendation for you by submitting this questionnaire by September 15th.
Application & Application Process Information – Students can apply at www.asbury.edu/apply or through The Common Application, there is no application fee for either method. We will also need a student transcript completed through junior year. There is no requirement for either an ACT or SAT. If a student does not meet minimum benchmarks, some additional information may be required or an interview over zoom.
How to schedule a campus tour – Students may schedule to attend one of our daily private guest tours or one of our visit events at www.asbury.edu/visit. These tours are highly customizable based on the student’s major and interests.
Campus Housing info – Students are required to live off campus unless approved by the university. One of the major reasons for approval is living with their parents at home within a certain radius of the university. There are two men’s dormitories and two women’s dormitories on campus along with on campus apartments for upper classman. The men’s are dormitory style, the women’s dormitories offer one dormitory style set up and one suite style set up.
