This is an area of growth for me. Within my grade 6 classroom, I have worked to help my students understand the difficult concept of Residential Schools and how those experiences have affected generations of people. We've also spent time celebrating First Nations cultures during Metis week as well as the Iroquois Confederacy as part of our Social Studies curriculum.
One of my extracurricular responsibilities at our school is to guide a group of grade 6 students while they create our school's video announcements. We made a commitment to broadcast a land acknowledgement once a week. Occasionally, we use the Cree version of the land acknowledgment recorded by Josephine Small. During the week of Orange Shirt Day, we include facts about residential schools each day.
