Program Curriculum
The Texas Model for the Comprehensive School Counseling Program covers the four general curriculum areas:
Interpersonal Effectiveness
Intrapersonal Effectiveness
Postsecondary Planning and Career Readiness
Personal Health and Safety
This section will provide an example of how the area of Intrapersonal Effectiveness was addressed using the Weslaco ISD Guidance Curriculum, Second Step Program and the Panorama Playbook in relation to the Panorama Survey results. Based on the Panorama Survey, students surveyed showed a need for Emotion Regulation. Students learned to better self manage their emotions, thoughts and behaviors in different situations. Students were provided with guidance lessons to improve emotion regulation.
Students in 3-5 showed and increase from 38% to 40 % in Emotion Regulation from Winter 2023 to Fall 2023.
Intrapersonal Effectiveness: Emotion Regulation Guidance Lessons
The Emotion Regulation and Grounding Techniques lesson showed positive results: students improved their ability to self-manage their thoughts and emotions. The details of the lesson are listed below.
For an elementary school counseling program to effectively help students develop important skills, it is important to work with parents, teachers, staff and community members. School Counselors work with parents to help their child be successful in school, while teachers can use counseling techniques in their classroom to help students understand their feelings and build strong relationships. Community members can offer resources and support, adding to a child's social and emotional development. By working together, these stakeholders can create an environment that ensures student's are successful.
