As of 4/10/25 we have an updated guide! Click here for the updated guide. There is also a pdf in the Purple Loosestrife Biocontrol folder in Box. The guide is complete aside from one small bit, an official number assignment that is added to the cover page, but everything else is ready for prime time. Once that last piece is complete, the guide will be added to the WNDR PLB webpage, too.

2025 Video help:
Recording of Feb. 26 PLB webinar. I apologize for there not being captions available. It used to be automatic in Zoom and something has changed. If anything comes out unclear, let me know and I'll get you any information you missed. (jeanne.scherer@wisc.edu)
The following two videos are pretty informal, and unfortunately, we weren't able to get the captioning to work. Please contact Matt.Puz@wisconsin.gov, if you need further assistance due to the missing captions. Because the viewer and SWIMS are both being updates regularly, these are not meant to be permanent videos but they may help you in the meantime.
Finding Purple Loosestrife on the Lakes and AIS Viewer: This 16-minute video walks you through how to choose the correct layers and find purple loosestrife sites on the viewer. As of 2/24/25, you can only see the Verified PL sites, however changes are coming in the future to be able to see those that have been reported but not verified, and those with the status "From Historic Monitoring Data."
Finding Purple Loosestrife Biocontrol Data and History in SWIMS: This 13-minute video is focused on how to find your PLB data and history starting with your PL county level project in SWIMS.
Interested in monitoring beetles and weevils? Both purple loosestrife beetle species and the flowering-eating weevils, Nanophyes marmoratus, can be reported in EDDMaps. These directions for using EDDMaps to report them may be somewhat out of date, but they should still help you get started.
SUPPLIES you can order from DNRAISinfo@wisconsin.gov.
These PLB supplies are now kept at the DNR warehouse
Aspirators (come with two vials): WY-116 - Supplies are VERY limited. Remember this are for sorting beetles into vials or small bags for putting on plants, not for collecting.
Vials for the aspirators: WY-117 - We have loads of these! If you need a few for something else, like collecting specimens, it's ok ot order them.
Unsewn, cut netting: WY-118
Sewn netting: WY-119 - prioritized for those who absolutely can’t find someone to sew for them, supplies very limited
Plant Stakes with NR40 message: WY-097 - Biodegradable and used in plants with beetle left in public locations
Forms: If the forms will not open properly on the PLB webpage, they can be downloaded from PLB Forms file in Box. The only two you'll need are the Beetle Release form and Beetle Presence and Activity form. No more NR40 permit apps needed! The Presence and Activity form is a great way to collect site data when you're out collecting beetles in the spring, doing post release site visits, or out and about checking the status of PL stands in your area. No need to use it during releases, since the beetle release form collects the same site status data.
Purple Loosestrife Biocontrol Job Descriptions - these are provided to help people understand the various roles they can play in a project and to be used for recruiting volunteers and other new partners. Each has a contact information section and they are word documents so that you can edit them to add your information.
