Look What Brown Can Do!

Better Together: Program Feature

7-27-23 Nature

Today was all about exploring!  This meant Nature and our Rock County Community.

We read "Brown is Beautiful" by Supriya Kelkar.

We had special community guests talk about what they do and then answer some fun questions to help us get to know them AND Rock County.

We finished with a fun map making activity.  We hid these community Brown is Beautiful cards in the park and forged our own paths to find them!

You can check out our materials by visiting our Pop Up Program Kit list.

7-13-23 Communication

We shared a bit of ourselves, our words and our world by reading the book, A Day with No Words by Tiffany Hammond.  July is Disability Pride Month and it is also BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, People of Color) Mental Health Month.

We used our program kit in several ways.  First, we used our picture frame coloring tablecloth for youth to settle into our story.  "Think of a word that is special to you.  Now draw a picture."

Then, we read the story.  The story features an African-American boy who speaks through a tablet.  We made our own 'tablet' that doubled as a Bingo game board each child designed with images.  We played this Bingo game using think aloud sentences to connect to the people highlighted in "Look What Brown Can Do" and our own experiences thanks to the WI 4-H Movement.

Or a great Rock County example!

We  tasted the rainbow with some fresh garden examples shared in the book as well as providing the opportunity to plant herbs to take home.

7-28-22 Look What Brown Can Do in Rock County!

It was a perfect day for swimming, but some of that summer heat was from all the ‘sparks’ youth shared participating in our community storytime.  We read “Look What Brown Can Do!” and we played Look What Brown Can Do in Rock County BINGO.

Every time we spun the wheel, we shared examples of amazing Sparks using the book and these great local resources:

History Harvest Exhibit

African American Historical Society of Beloit

AND, Laura shared a wonderful STEM activity.
