What is a CV?

A CV is a snapshot of your skills, education and work experience that gives a prospective employer an overview of who you are, what you have done and what you hope to achieve in the future.

The aim of submitting a CV is to demonstrate you are the right person for the role and get you to the next stage of the application process. CVs may be used to apply for jobs, apprenticeships, work experience or voluntary work.

Your CV needs to look professional and include all the information the employer may require.

What to include?

A CV consists of several sections

Name and contact information
Personal Profile
Skills
Education
Work experience/Employment
Interests
References

Use a professional email address for job hunting.
Use clean fonts, such as Arial throughout the page.
Do not exceed two pages. Employers look for CVs that are concise.
Your name should be the title of your CV, not Curriculum Vitae.
Do not include date of birth, age, gender, a photo or martial status.
Start with your most recent education / employment and work backwards.
Use bullet points to make your CV easy to read and allow employers to pick out key skills.
Proof read your CV to check for spelling / grammar errors. Do not rely on spell check.
