2. CREATE A COMMON APPLICATION ACCOUNT (2 MINS)
When you go to set up your account, READ the below first and click the link!
you are a "first-year student"
Colleges may need to contact you during the application process, so be mindful of which email address you choose. Use a personal email address that you check regularly, does not use inappropriate language, and have access to after you graduate from high school
Complete your registration information; you will input: your name, phone number, date of birth
Use your legal name as it appears on official school documents and standardized tests. This will make sure colleges can match documents to the correct person
At the end, you will adjust your communication preferences and accept the Common App privacy policy
Select "create account" and you’re done! ARE YOU READY... Click Here!
3. COMPLETE THE SECTIONS OF THE COMMON APPLICATION (45 MINS)
Click here!- To populate the Education section
4. ADD COLLEGES
The College Search tab is where you will search for and add the colleges you want to apply to. If you have a school in mind, you can search by name
Adding a college is easy! You may add a college using the add button in the search results list. You can also select a college and add them using the "Add to My Colleges" button from their info screen
Once you've added colleges, you can see them on your Dashboard and in the My Colleges tab. Keep in mind you may only add up to 20 colleges. You may adjust your list of colleges at any time. Once you've submitted the application to that school, you will not be able to remove the school from your college list.
5. COMPLETE FERPA
From the "My Colleges" tab, select a college and click on "Recommenders and FERPA" on the left of the page
Then click on the blue "Complete Release Authorization" link and answer the questions (colleges prefer that you waive your right to access so that more credibility is given to the recommendation) WATCH what FERPA is
6. MATCH YOUR COMMON APPLICATION WITH NAVIANCE
Log in to Naviance Student and go to “Colleges I am Applying To” (how applying and deadlines should be accurate)
Click the RED banner “Match Accounts” (follow the prompts)
Add NON-Common App. schools to Naviance Student, "Colleges I am applying to"
7. UNDERSTANDING REQUIREMENTS. STAY ORGANIZED! (HOW ?)
Organizer- Click here! (same as the one already provided)
Explore Colleges- Click Here!
Once a school is on your dashboard, go to "My Colleges," click on a college and you will see "College Information"
check out how many teacher recommendations the school REQUIRES (ONLY send what is required! If 0 and allow a few, send ONE)
check out does the school allow for "other recommender" (not all schools do, if they do not, they will not accept)
Requirements Grid- click the "Dashboard" tab, look to the upper right-hand side- "application requirements"
Writing Requirements by College (college-specific questions and writing supplements)- Click Here!
TASK 2-
1. UPDATE/FINALIZE "Colleges I'm Applying To" in Naviance-
Add any school that you are applying to that is not on your list in Naviance "Colleges I'm Applying To"
School deadlines and applications MUST be accurate in Naviance!! (double check deadline by looking at the website AND Common App)
If you need to remove a college, please email Mrs. Atanasoff in the College and Career Center - atanasoffs@wiltonps.org
2. REVIEW YOUR LIST WITH YOUR SCHOOL COUNSELOR
3. DOUBLE CHECK so school documents can be sent- Click here!
4. REQUEST TRANSCRIPT/COUNSELOR RECOMMENDATION- Yellow/Golden Ticket!!
This request takes care of all documents the colleges may need, including both MID-YEAR GRADES (the mid-year grades will go to all schools one applied to) and FINAL TRANSCRIPTS (the final transcript will be sent to the school you indicated you will attend)
If required or requested by the college, first-quarter grades will be sent. Instructions will be provided to seniors near the end of the quarter
Your initial request must be in 3 weeks ahead of your first deadline
If you need additional requests, list only the additional college(s), not those already requested. Make sure the additional college(s) are listed in the common application and Naviance "Colleges I am Applying to"
For Coalition Applications, students must indicate, as directed in their application, that the transcript and other school materials will be sent through Naviance.
5. INVITE TEACHERS- through NAVIANCE (not the Common Application)
Go to the "Colleges I'm Applying to" school list in Naviance Student
Scroll down to the bottom of the list and find where it says "Letters of recommendation," and click on the LINK "letters of recommendation section." (IF you add a college after inviting teachers already, you must do this again for that college)
6. "OTHER RECOMMENDER" YOU WILL ASSIGN THROUGH THE COMMON APPLICATION
Ask in person (not all schools have this option). This usually is a voice teacher, coach, boss
Go to "My Colleges'" tab in the Common Application, select the college, click on "Recommenders and FERPA," and scroll down (or up); if you see "other recommender," assign the person (name, email needed) DONE!
7. REQUEST SAT and/or ACT SCORES TO BE SUBMITTED to each school directly from the testing agencies, if you are NOT applying-test optional *Some colleges may accept self-reported scores
Send in advance (2-3 weeks). They are not received instantaneously. Sending SAT Sending ACT
8. SUBMIT APPLICATIONS
Review and Submit (review the application, pay the application fee, and submit)
If a college has a supplement, submit that AFTER you submit the application (go back to "My Colleges" tab, click on school)
Many Colleges have adopted what is called an SRAR (where you self-report your transcript)
How do I know if my school has an SRAR- when you press submit on the application (What's Next) and/or in the school's portal and/or email letting you know they received your application.
You will want to complete this as soon as it is available, do not wait! Read, in the SRAR, the directions!
