Safety and Accessibility in Sora
Sora App for Wilson County Schools: A Safe Digital Library for Your Student
We are committed to providing a safe, accessible, and engaging digital reading experience for all students in Wilson County Schools. The Sora app, powered by OverDrive, is our platform for digital ebooks and audiobooks, offering thousands of titles for students in PreK-12.
Here is an overview of the key safety features and collection curation that ensures an age-appropriate library experience for your child.
Content Curation and Access Levels
Wilson County Schools has curated our Sora collection to ensure all materials are developmentally and academically appropriate for our students. Sora uses a system of Access Levels to automatically limit what a student can see and borrow based on their enrolled grade level.
*Important Note on State Libraries: The strict access rules and grade-level guardrails outlined above apply only to the Wilson County Schools Sora Collection. Additional libraries provided through the platform, such as the NC Kids and NC Kids Level Up Digital Libraries, are curated by the State Library of North Carolina and may have broader access ranges than our locally selected district collection. See more details below.
Key Safety Feature: Preventing Access to Higher Levels
A student is only shown the collections for their current grade band and all levels below it.
For example, a student in Upper Elementary (grades 3-5) will see titles suitable for both Lower and Upper Elementary grades, but will be automatically prevented from viewing or borrowing books labeled as Middle School or High School level.
Your child can always read down (titles for younger grades/lower interest level) but cannot read up (titles for older, more mature grades). This guardrail is in place to provide a safe, age-appropriate reading environment.
Enrollment and External Library Access (Opt-In/Opt-Out)
Access to Sora is managed by the district and requires parental consent, offering you direct control over your child's participation.
Key Safety Feature:
Your student's account for the Wilson County Schools Sora Collection is activated only after a parent or guardian completes the opt-in consent form.
Students log in using their secure school credentials (e.g., ClassLink), which keeps their reading activity confidential and secure.
Additional Safety and Accessibility Features
Beyond content curation, Sora includes features designed to protect student privacy and support all learners:
Privacy First: Sora is designed for K-12 education. Their reading data remains private and is primarily used to help educators monitor reading progress and assign materials.
Offline Access: Students can download books while on a Wi-Fi connection and read them later offline.
Customizable Reading Settings: These features help make reading comfortable for all students:
Dyslexic Font
High Contrast Mode
Adjustable Text Size, Spacing, and Audio Speed.
Available on Multiple Device Types

⚠️ A Note About Public Library Access in Sora
While the Sora app does allow users to connect with public library collections using a personal library card, this feature is not available through Wilson County Schools accounts.
This decision helps ensure that all content accessed through school accounts is curated for age appropriateness and reviewed for alignment with our district’s standards. Public library collections, while robust, may include materials that are not tailored to specific student age groups or school-level expectations.
If families wish to explore additional reading options through the public library, they may do so independently using a personal device and library card login, outside of the school-managed Sora environment.
Do you currently have access and wish to opt-out?
Please click the "Opt-Out of Sora" button and allow 5-10 business days for the access to be revoked.
For questions or concerns please contact Natalie Mercer, District Media & Technology Coordinator.
