Speight Middle School is a Green Ribbon PBIS School. We use positive reinforcement to showcase the behaviors that are desired and consistent classroom management processes to correct non-productive behaviors.
With “Cougars on the P.R.O.W.L.”, Speight staff developed five tenants to headline the behaviors most desired to provide for an environment conducive to serious study and respect for oneself, other people, and property.
The detailed expectations of each of the five categories have been applied to behavior in the classroom, the hallway, the restroom, the cafeteria, in assemblies and on the bus. Students must experience consistent application of these expectations for the P.R.O.W.L. to be effective.
Homeroom teachers will be provided with curriculum for instruction of their first blocks for five days at the beginning of each semester to teach and reinforce Speight procedures and provide students with reasoning skills behind each expectations. Staff members will also model the expectations by adhering to the P.R.O.W.L. themselves.
DEMERITS-Teachers may record a demerit for a student whose behavior is not meeting expectations as a warning step that gives the student the opportunity to correct the behavior before being referred to the office for further disciplinary action. Three demerits will result in an office referral.
SILENT LUNCH- Silent Lunch may be assigned by teachers and administrators. Teachers who assign silent lunch are responsible for monitoring students during lunch. Silent Lunch will be administered in the cafeteria or in the classroom.
DETENTION - Detention may be assigned at lunch or for a period by an administrator and will be administered in the office or in the ISS Classroom.
IN-SCHOOL SUSPENSION - Students may be assigned In-School Suspension (ISS) in the front office, in a teacher's classroom, or in an ISS classroom. Teachers will be notified by email when one of their students will be in ISS. Once the teacher is notified, assignments for students will be sent to the office or ISS classroom. Teachers will also check in with students in ISS during their planning to assist them with academic questions. Students are responsible for completing their assignments while in ISS.
AFTER SCHOOL DETENTION – Students may be assigned detention after school until 4:30 pm and will have to be picked up from school. This will apply mainly to students who have excessive tardies.
OUT-OF-SCHOOL SUSPENSIONS - Out-of-School suspensions will be assigned by administration based on severity of the infraction, teacher referral, student statements, and discipline history.
Speight has PBIS Events throughout the year that recognize students for good behavior. These events may be announced or unannounced. Participation in these events may be hindered by demerits, office referrals, attendance, or missing assignments.
Speight has a school-wide house system where all students and staff are randomly divided into teams called "Houses". We have 4 houses at Speight, but we always emphasize the fact that we are "one home." The houses are Chifundo (Compassion/Red), Inovasi (Innovation/Blue), Whakaute (Respect/Black), and Zavazek (Commitment/Green). The houses compete throughout the year for points, bragging rights, and an award at the end of each semester by participating in house challenges, house rallies, and going above and beyond by P.R.O.W.L.ing and exhibiting our Core Values. Parents also can earn points by attending school events. Teachers are encouraged to use this system in their classrooms as a classroom management tool and academic motivation and to earn points for their houses by participating in house activities.
Teachers choose students bi-weekly to be recognized with a Positive Referral. The students names are called over the intercom to report to the office where they receive the positive referral, a piece of candy, and a house point.
Each grade-level recognizes a student of the month who represents Speight well by P.R.O.W.L.ing and exhibiting our core values (Compassion, Respect, Innovation, and Commitment). This student is featured in the Cougar Copy and on a bulletin board near the cafeteria.
The Cougar Copy is a monthly electronic newsletter that celebrates student success. It typically recognizes students for their participation in events such as Battle of the Books, Spelling Bee, Honors Band, etc. It also features our Athletes and Students of the Month. It is posted in Google Classroom and shared on ClassDojo, Facebook, and Twitter.
