Speight School was established in 1951 at 6640 Speight School Road in Stantonsburg. It was the only school in the county offering high school classes to black students at that time. The largest enrollment was 1,140 in 1970 in grades 1-12. When the county consolidated schools, Speight became a county middle school. The building continued to serve students in the southeastern third of the county until 2001 when the school moved to its current location. Speight’s focus on educational excellence and opportunity continues to this day.
