Willington Prep - Celebrating 140 years - 1885-2025
Welcome Back, Year 6! We hope you all had a wonderful summer break. Although this was a short first week, we have already managed to pack in so much!
In History, we began by thinking about the construct of time itself. We questioned where the counting of time originated and explored why timelines are so valuable in helping historians understand cause and consequence - both key to working out why events happen. In Geography, we launched our new topic Extreme Earth. Our first focus was on understanding what weather actually is, and how it influences the way humans live, work, and adapt. In Drama, we learnt about the features and purpose of radio plays, and how they work as a performance form. Working in groups, the children selected a genre and began writing their own short radio plays, the first step in an exciting four-week project.
In English this week, we have started our new text Holes - looking at the first few chapters, using our inference skills to start to understand the characters. Additionally, our Accelerate Programme started this week, with a focus on creative writing from a picture prompt. In Latin, we began the second Minimus text book, predictably entitled Minimus Secundus. We met the family of characters 5 years on and translated the first picture story, as they prepare to relocate to Eboracum (York).
Finally, in Science we started by reviewing the topics for the year and revisiting lab safety rules. We examined potential risks and discussed measures to reduce hazards during experiments, exploring how to work safely in the school science lab.
It has been a fantastic start, and we are looking forward to all that this term will bring!
