Choosing an Independent Reading Book 

• Check out the cover; do you like the art, colors, pictures? 

• Read the back cover; does the story seem interesting? 

• Sample a page; open to a random page. Do you understand most of the words? Do you like the way the author writes? 

• Take 2; find a quiet spot and read a few random pages. 

• Stay in the same genre, or same author; start with a book you read and liked before, and look for similar choices
