identify triggers & setting events that immediately precede the behavior
identify the specific, observable & measurable behavior in a way that a stranger can recognize it
what happens immediately after the behavior: actions and reactions of peers & adults
Make a hypothesis about the function of the undesired behavior:
Obtain attention, items, sensory stimulation
Escape/avoid attention, tasks, sensory stimulation
Prevent the need for the inappropriate behavior by manipulating the antecedents (triggers & setting events in the environment)
Teach a more appropriate replacement behavior that serves the same function for the student
Reinforce the desired behavior & make the inappropriate behavior less rewarding
Mental health related behaviors often have internal triggers & setting events that cannot be manipulated by others.
