PBIS Overview
Goals of PBIS
Positive Behavior Interventions & Supports
Sense of Belonging: Create school environments in which positive, pro-social behavior is the norm
Teach & Prevent: by teaching, prompting, and acknowledging the desired behaviors and doing so as relentlessly as we do academic behaviors. Make the desired behaviors more rewarding than the undesired ones.
Ensure equity and safety for all: by designing common systems and practices when students make mistakes, we are more intentional in using trauma-informed responses to behavior errors.
Data-based decision making: Data is key to ensuring fidelity and refining practices. PBIS is an evidence and research based framework that follows implementation science to ensure effectiveness and consistency. That is why it is mentioned in both federal and state education code.
PBIS Systems Logic, based on Implementation Science
PBIS is is not a purchased program or curriculum.
It is a framework that organizes effective, evidence-based practices into a 3-Tiered system.
Systems:
Layers of teams use data to create action plans
District Leadership Team
Designs 3-5 Year action plans with priorities for staff training and district-wide practices
Reflects on data to monitor school climate and progress towards goals (suspension rates, ODRs, site visits, fidelity surveys, etc)
District PBIS/MTSS Coach
Meets regularly with site PBIS Lead teachers for training & technical assistance
Meets with LACOE sponsored District Coaches Network for training & technical assistance
Site PBIS Teams - Tier 1
Meet monthly to review ODR and other data
Create plans to teach & recognize matrix behaviors
Site Tier 2 Teams
Meet regularly to identify students who need additional supports
