I became interested in international law after studying abroad in London during my undergraduate career. While abroad, I fell in love with travel and realized the importance of global connectedness. Lawyers are influencers in the professional world and I think it is essential to leverage this power to be a change agent in society. A global perspective fosters cultural competence that is so critical to advocacy. International law is a great platform for these concepts.
I want to be a part of the ILS board because I think it will be a great opportunity to assume leadership in an area that I am passionate about. Additionally, I want to build a network of students and alumni who share an interest in this field.
This summer I had an EJW fellowship working remotely for Disability Rights Texas, specifically under their Disaster Law attorney. I was able to learn how to advocate the crossover between disability law and disaster law for clients that were survivors of Hurricane Harvey as well as for marginalized populations as a whole. I worked on a comment to the Federal Register, a writ mandamus, a policy update from the recent Texas Legislature, engaged with FEMA, and drafted ABA resolutions.
