In the William Floyd School District, we believe technology is a powerful tool for discovery. However, the heart of an elementary education is developing a student’s "inner voice"—their unique ability to think, write, and solve problems independently.
As Artificial Intelligence (AI) becomes more common, we want to partner with families to ensure these tools support, rather than replace, student learning.
In our classrooms, "integrity" means being honest about your work. We expect students to:
Do their own thinking: Writing their own sentences and using the math strategies taught in class.
Give credit: Acknowledging when they use an idea or picture from someone else.
Build the foundation: Using AI as a springboard for ideas, not a ghostwriter for assignments.
Because AI models "learn" from the data we give them, we follow strict safety standards to protect our students' digital footprints:
The "No Personal Info" Rule: Students are taught never to share names, addresses, birthdays, or daily routines with an AI.
The Postcard Rule: We teach students to treat every AI prompt like a postcard—never type anything they wouldn't want a stranger or a teacher to read.
Factchecking: AI can sometimes present false information as fact. We encourage students to verify AI claims with trusted sources like library books or their teachers.
Most AI platforms (like ChatGPT or Gemini) have age requirements of 13+ or 18+.
In School: Students only use AI tools vetted by the district for privacy compliance and under direct teacher supervision.
During Library Instruction: Our elementary librarians are empowering students for the 21st century by providing essential instruction on the safe, ethical, and effective use of AI.
At Home: We strongly recommend parents supervise any AI use to ensure content is age-appropriate and to prevent "chat" behaviors that could lead to oversharing.
Digital Kindness: Using AI to mimic voices or create images to tease others is a violation of our Anti-Bullying Policy. In some instances, it may even be against the law. We use technology to create, not to diminish.
