TEC Courses for ELL & SPED

Westwood has teamed up with The Education Cooperative (TEC) to provide online courses as options to satisfy the recertification requirements of 15 PDPs of ELL/SEI (Strategies to Enhance Instruction for English Language Learners in the Classroom) and 15 PDPs of SPED-related professional development (Engaging All Students with Differentiated Instruction or Inclusive Classroom Design with Technology). These requirements apply to all educators who hold academic professional licenses through DESE and are part of the 5-year recertification cycle; see the Licensure Info page for more info about recertification. The TEC courses are web-based, self-paced, and available to access at your convenience.

*Please note that the ELL/SEI course is NOT an "Endorsement" course. See the SEI page for more information.

Registration:  To register click here.  [Please use your Westwood email address to access these no-cost to you courses. The registration form has been programmed to recognize the districts who have sponsored the course and allow staff members to proceed at no-cost, as long as they use their school email address.] Once you submit the registration form, a “course key” will be emailed to you that will enable you to access the course in which you are interested. The Enrollment Key for 2023-2024 is "Westwood2023".

Cost: Free to you; sponsored by the Westwood Schools as part of a collaborative project with TEC and TEC-member districts. In addition, for Westwood educators, WPS will offer 1 incremental credit toward salary lane advancement for each course the first time you take it. See the "Credits & Forms" page for more information about applying for and receiving incremental credit.

For those who have already taken the TEC courses for previous recertification cycles:

The Department of Education also offers a free, online self-paced course to satisfy the 15 PDPs in Special Education. See below for more information from DESE.

15 PDP Special Education Course: New ESE Resource: Free Online Courses on Inclusive Practice

We know you're lifelong learners, and we know that every class presents different challenges. The Department has sponsored two free online courses, Foundations for Inclusive Practice: Educator and Foundations for Inclusive Practice: Administrator, to help educators be more effective in inclusive settings. These courses are self-paced and are one way to earn the 15 professional development points in "effective schooling for students with disabilities and instruction of students with diverse learning styles" that are required to renew a professional license. Educators can register at the Guidebook for Inclusive Practice website. In addition, districts that are interested in forming communities of practice as a supplement to the courses can fill out this short form.

Frequently Asked Questions:

Q. Can I start a course and go back to it at any time?

A. Yes!

Q. Can I work on both courses at the same time?

A. Yes!

Q. Do I need to turn in any documentation to my principal or to Central Office?

A. Not for recertification. It is each staff member’s responsibility to maintain his/her own recertification records.  However, you will need to provide documentation in order to receive incremental credit from the district. Please submit a "Request for Course Credit" form through TalentEd prior to taking the course, and submit the certificate of completion to Jodi Steverman in Central Office when you have finished the course.

Q. If I don’t “pass” (80%) the first time, can I take the course again?

A. Yes! Just register for the course as you did the first time.

Q. Are these courses the only way to fulfill this requirement?

A. No. How an educator acquires the required PDPs is up to each individual. These courses are simply free options that the district is providing to educators.

Q. Is there a set time frame in which I need to complete the course after I have started it?

A. No the course is self-paced. You can take as long as you need to complete it.
