Variations on a theme

More often than not, artists work in a series.

That means they choose an idea or theme and create many different artworks related to that theme.

For example, Georgia O'Keeffe was famous for her large flower paintings, but no two looked exactly alike.

Stuart Davis’ love of the city can be seen through his work as he grew from a more realistic to abstract painter.

What do you see that reminds you of a city?

Dear Artists,

Today we will start with a think-pair-share activity.

  1. Take one full minute to think of (older students can write) as many themes as you can. We just saw art related to the themes of flowers, the city, and uplifting messages. What other theme ideas can you add?

  2. Pair up with a partner to share your theme ideas.

  3. Share your favorite two ideas with the class.

Your challenge will be to choose one theme and sketch six different variations of that theme. Once you have created six small sketches, you will share the ideas behind each one with a partner. They will give you feedback in the form of T.A.G. Choose one of your sketches to create larger with your best effort on thick art paper.

T= Tell something you like

A= Ask a question

G= Give a suggestion

When you are ready, sketch a final drawing and add color to your final drawing WITH YOUR BEST EFFORT, and name on the back. If you don't finish we can always work on it next class. This project will be posted to your seesaw at the end. (Print Worksheet)
