In Class: Lesson 4.4: Parallel and Perpendicular Lines
Homework:
4-4 Extra Practice Worksheet (due Wednesday)
MATHCOUNTS Warm-Up 5 & 6 (due Wednesday)
4-1 to 4-3 Quiz TOMORROW
Lesson 4-1 to 4-2 Review (Answer Key)
When y = a constant, it's a horizontal line. For example, y = 7 is a horizontal line at 7. If x = a constant, it's a vertical line with an undefined slope. For example, x = 7 is a vertical line at 7.
If an equation is in standard form, you can graph it by finding the x- and y-intercepts. For example, 5x + 2y = 10. You can put 0 in for x and solve for y (0, 5) and then put 0 in for y and solve for x (2, 0).
If an equation is in standard form, you can also put it into slope-intercept form. For example, -2x + y = 3. Add 2x to both sides and get y = 2x + 3. Graph (0,3) which is the y-intercept. From that point, go up 2 and over 1 to the right.
When writing an equation in standard form, make sure it's in the format of ax + by = c. REMEMBER...the coefficient "a" cannot be negative or a fraction.
There are 4 questions like the green packet review I gave you on Friday. Make sure to check the answer key. Time yourself to make sure you can do these problems in less than 4 minutes each. That's writing 3 different formats of an equation in 4 minutes or less.
To change slope-intercept to standard form, get the x and y on the same side. For example, y = -3/4x - 2. First, add the 3/4x to get 3/4x + y = -2. Then, because you can't have a fraction as a leading coefficient, multiply the whole equation by 4 to get 3x + 4y = -8.
To change point slope to standard form, distribute and get the constants to the right and the x and y on the left. For example, y - 9 = 1/2(x - 2)...distribute the 1/2 to get y - 9 = 1/2x -1. Then add 9 to both sides and subtract 1/2x from both sides. -1/2x + y = 8. Then multiply the equation by -2 to get x - 2y = -16.
To change standard form into slope-intercept form, subtract the x from both sides and then divide by the coefficient of y. For example, 7x - 2y = 14. Subtract the 7x to get -2y = -7x + 14. Then divide by -2 to get y = 7/2x - 7.
