Join the Staples Zero Waste Committee (ZWC) for our first sustainable holiday festival at Staples High School in Westport, CT on Saturday, Nov 12th. Our mission is to make the holidays a little more sustainable by spreading holiday cheer! The Westport Holiday Green Festival has something for every occasion and holiday. The festival also includes food, kids crafts, gifts to buy, a thrift store, and even more. If you're interested in supporting local sustainability initiatives or want to check out some sustainable gift options for the holidays, stop by the Staples Cafeteria from 10am-4pm on Nov. 12th to support the Staples ZWC, Town of Westport, and the 25+ vendors.
The event runs from 10am-4pm in the cafeteria at Staples High School. Entrance is free and parking is by the Staples Field House and Pool.
Exhibitors must check in between 8am-9 am at the check in table at the outside entrance of the cafeteria.
Staples had a booth at the Zero Waste Sustainability Faire in Wilton! The event contained music, food, a special performance, and a variety of booths from numerous zero waste organizations around Fairfield County.
On June 1st we advertised the Zero Waste Committee to a group of 8th graders from our middle schools, where we told them about what we did and our goals for the future.
On April 30th teamed up with Zen Wtr to clean up trash from Compo Beach. There were over 50 participants comprising both students from schools across the district as well as parents! In total, it was a successful cleanup as over full 20 bags of trash were cleaned up from the beach.
On April 27th we launched our ecobotique thrift store, designed to counter the environmentally unfriendly effects of fast fashion. We collected donations of unused and gently used clothing and sold them at a low price to the student body. These thrift stores are hosted quarterly throughout the school year.
For Earth Day, we created a bulletin board featuring important information about sustainable living and composting, designed to raise awareness to the student body of how to live a sustainable life.
For April 1st and 8th's Library Friday Fun Day, we helped students create bird feeders from recycled water bottles. Some students hung these feeders up around the campus, others brought them home.
We ran a table at the Staples involvement faire, an event designed to provide an opportunity for students to be involved in activities outside the classroom. After the faire, numerous freshmen joined the ZWC!
We constructed three bins for composting, recycling, and trash, and placed these bins in our cafeteria. Instead of uneaten food contributing to landfills, now students are able to use the composting bins to put uneaten food to a good use.
For the Voice 4 Change initiative, we proposed using the grant to increase the number of water bottle refill stations around the school. While we didn't win, this is an issue we will continue to advocate for going forward.
