It is important to be able to understand your students and the only way to do that is through the three easy steps of observing, documenting, and assessing them. By observing the children, you are finding out their interests and dislikes, this allows you to create a more hospital and inviting classroom. By documenting them you are creating a file to look back on and see in improvements in their work or to be able to so their parents. Assessing allows you to evaluate their growth to a standard that all professionals use. This is about using appropriate observing, documenting, and assessing tools in the field that is effective in creating an appropriate environment for the children.
Physical Development Observation
After observing a child in an environment that they had to show off their physical development we were tasked with creating strategies that would better help the child grow and develop with the skills they already have. This is a strategy that we use in each of the observations but this was one of the first observations I did and wished to show the improvement from the beginning.
This artifact is about using what I observed in the classroom and creating a regiment or activities for the child to participate in and grow from them. I had to use my knowledge from the classroom, what I observed, and organized it in a way to better understand my reasoning for picking out the certain activities. I had to compare their strengths and weaknesses, what could be used to enhance his abilities and create a more productive environment. This was one of the observations I was thinking of activities as they were interacting with their environment. I was thinking on my feet to find a better use of his skills and a way to better show them off.
Website Parent Communication Layout
Tasked with creating a website that helps a parent foster creativity in their household and how to identify it in their child. This was a resource aimed at helping a family identify and document a child’s progression with different forms of art. This artifact was helpful in preparing me for creating something that can be viewed by others to help them learn more about different approached and tools they could use with their children.
This is only a layout of the website I created to better inform parents. It has all my information before google sites switched formats and the link was gone. This was an exciting and interesting assignment to complete and showed me different ways to be able to include the family in the classroom or in the child’s life. Creating a website for parents to find information on different subjects or topics they were interested in was an assignment I took a lot of joy in working on and completing. It was the blend of creativity, and professionalism that helped me to create something to be proud in.
Social and Emotional Development Observation
With this task I was to observe an infant in a social environment. The child I observed played with other children and the adult caregiver in the room with them. The aim of this observation was to see how far they were progressing on the given checklist. This was helpful in showing that not all children will progress at the same level but with the right guidance can improve or show growth.
This was one of the longer observations that had more items to be on the look out for. The infant I observed was well advanced for their age and completed many of the items without much difficulty. In the areas he struggled with I created activities or looked at the skills he could improve on to meet that items requirements. Another thing this observation allowed me to experience was working with a much younger audience, before this one I worked with toddlers and children between the ages of 3 and 5. This allowed me to interact with younger children and see if this is the area, I wanted to work in.
Work Sample Portfolio
For this work artifact we researched and summarized the uses of different assessments we would use to do observations. This assignment was aimed at getting us used to the many forms of assessments and what the pros and cons of each one would be. We looked at the benefits of using assessments and how they are able to show us, or the family a child’s progress.
An important thing to know about this standard is that there is so many different ways to observe the children and ways to assess their works. It’s important to be observing them and documenting their actions, and work. But it is also important to be able to look at everything you have gathered and apply it to the classroom to create a better environment. The purpose of this assignment was to look into the different forms of assessment, when they should be used in the and in the correct setting. Its important to use the correct tool for each setting to be create a more child centered classroom that is there to help them grow, and to do that you need to understand their actions by observing them.
Each of NAEYC’s standards are important, this standard is aimed at the betterment of improving the child’s setting.
The third standard is about observing and documenting the child’s actions and work. This is a part of the course I enjoyed and looked forward to doing. Aimed at observing what the child does and how I can find ways to better them from what I observed. This is something I exceled at and took great pleasure in completing for each course. This is where I learned about hands on work with the child. I got in the field and observed them during the classroom hours, when they outside playing, or when they were having breaks. I spent many hours in the classroom and different settings observing how they interact with their surroundings, use their current skills, and work on new skills.
I overcame my fear of children through all these observations. I was nervous around small children and afraid they might be nervous or shy around me. This is something I was able to work on and finally break after all the observations. I look forward to working with children now and how they interact in their surroundings. I look forward to seeing what I can do differently to better accommodate them in the classroom and bring out the best in them with all the tools before me available.
