This standard is about being prepared for the early childhood that we are going into. May this be teaching, as an aid, or running a center. The purpose of standard 1 is to ground us in how children develop at the different stages of childhood and the signs to spot for in their age group. It’s important to have a good understanding of the characteristics of the children you are interacting with and their needs. The environment is just one of the influences that you have to take into consideration when taking care of a child in this profession. The items in the environment, from toys to the people. It is a healthy, respectful, and supporting environment for the child to be in. Academically is it challenging and stimulating enough for the child. Is the child reaching their potential through the environment and what you have to offer as a childcare professional?
Historical PowerPoint
For this assignment we were tasked with researching a theory that we were interested in seeing how it relates to early childhood and education. I chose Piaget’s theory and how its ideas are like NAEYC standards. Goes though the stages of life and the importance in each stage for what the child should be learning.
I chose this assignment because it was about a researcher and a theory that I was interested in and believed in throughout my academic career. Piaget ideas are aligned closely with NAEYC Standards and as a teacher we need to keep these standards relevant in what we teach and how we teach in the classroom. Piaget looked at how active learning, adaption, schemes, and assimilation/accommodations were beneficial in supporting a young child’s education and development. This is what standard 1 is all about, supporting the child in the classroom. This assignment was a blast to do because I was allowed to be creative and I explored new elements of PowerPoint while creating this presentation.
Book Review
This artifact is about looking at books that are aimed at children and whether or not they are suitable for a well-rounded learning environment. Tasked with researching four books that interested us and we thought may be suitable to the classroom. At the end of this assignment books that I first thought was ideal for the classroom were actually harmful or not the desired effect for positive learning in the classroom.
The book review is great example of the second key element for standard 1. Looking at multiple influences on a child’s development is what this assignment was all about. We had to find four books and read them. After we have read them, we had to look at them from a professional point of view on whether this book would be suitable in the classroom. there were different parts and aspects we had to consider when evaluating each book. The intended age or audience of the book, whether the characters could be relatable, what was the message the book was trying to convey to the audience. We had to read and analyze each book thoroughly and it was so much fun to dissect each book. I found some amazing books that I would recommend to others in the childcare profession but there were also some books that did not meet all expectations.
Parent Communication
This was a fun and engaging artifact that has us stand in the place a teacher creating a flyer for the parents of our imaginary classroom. We were tasked with explaining the different cognitive areas that children are learning at a young age, and what they could do to facilitate learning at home. It was our way to be creative and use all the information we had gathered up to this point to create something that brings it all together.
This key element is about using developmental knowledge to create healthy, respectful, supportive, and challenging learning environments. For this assignment I was to be in the place of a teacher and had to create a flyer that was informative for parents. It was aimed at how promote a healthy development in cognitive, social, and physical development areas. We had to discuss and list different activities or projects the parents could do with the child or help them work on. It was an insightful and creative assignment to work on. This is something that can be used not only for parents but be informative for other child care workers or be insightful for younger children. This is helps answer some questions that parents have or children want to know more about. This communication flyer can be used to spread awareness of positive ways to promote growth in the different development areas.
How well do I know this standard?
That’s a big question because I only know as much as I know up to this point. There is still so much more to learn about this standard but I am confident to say I know the principles to a good degree. The important thing to know about this standard is that learning is everywhere and as a teacher its up to us to take that learning and narrow it down and make is digestible for the children.
The important thing about this standard is sneaking in learning in activities that appear fun to the child but are educational. When I’m creating a lesson plan, I am looking at an element that children are fascinated or interested in. Then I look at learning objectives to see if there is anything that can be connected to what they like. I go into each of my lesson plans like I am the student, it helps me to put myself in their shoes. Another experience I have is when I had to observe the layout of a classroom and then ask that teacher question about this teaching style. It was an insightful experience because what seems like a cut and dry job is actually more like cogs in a machine. Every piece has a home and a specific way it works with one another. The flow of the classroom is there to promote learning from one area to the next and the schedule is there to give each development learning area its own time and focus.
