It is important to include the family in the classroom. You only have the child for so many hours a day. They have a life outside the classroom and it involves their family and community. Which is why it is important to include the family in the classroom as much as you can because they understand their child more than you do. This is their child; they have raised them longer than you have been teaching them and its important to take in what they have to say because they have as much interest in getting the best education for them that you do. Not only is it important to include the family but to talk about their community and let them be able to embrace what they make them proud about their community. It’s a part of their identify and makes up a piece of them, it’s important to respect and support them.
Family Friend Interview
This was an in-depth interview with my mother that covered the different facets of a relationship, how she was raised, and how she raised her own children. How she was raised influenced how she would later raise her own family and, in the paper, mentioned different theories and systems. This paper shows how and why that style of child raising occurred and what influence it had on me as an individual.
I chose this article for this key element because it’s important to understand where you came before you can move onto someone else. This allowed me to make connection with some of my mother’s actions and ones that I made without even thinking. Some of my actions were very similar to my mothers and its eerie to see that transcend through generations. Another reason this is well suited to this key element is because it looks at my mother’s family, and how it has affected her and shaped her life. by understanding my mother’s life, I was able to see how her actions and her family’s actions shaped her to be the person I know today.
Parenting Observation and Interview
This was one of the more insightful observations I’ve done throughout the course of my degree. I interviewed and observed someone I worked with and thought of having her life in order. But I learned about her hardships and what she does to keep her children safe and have a normal childhood. This showed me that each family is going to have their own story to tell and as a teacher I will need to listen and be there for them in whatever way I can.
This was one of my favorite assignments to do because I go to interview a close friend and learn more about her life. She married and had two little girls, the father was from Mexico so they celebrated Mexican customs in the house and it was fascinating to learn how she balances her own ideals and the fathers to create home where both are celebrated and appreciated. This is one of the reasons why it is so important to include the family in the classroom because so much of what happens at homes shapes the children into who they are children. I learned about what it means to be another ethnicity and the importance of being able to respect their ideals in the classroom to create a welcoming environment.
Facility Assignment
It is important to create a balanced learning environment that meets more then what is dictated and passed down from the board of education. It is important to create an area that balances what the child needs to learn, how they learn it, and where they are learning it. This article goes into detail about the many different facilities that cater to educating young child in different settings.
The facility assignment was interesting to do because I was able to look into so many different types of facility environments for children to be in. I thought there was only a couple different ones, the day care environment, the school room, and then homeschooling. But there are so many different options to be looked at. There is one where they integrate young children with elderly people, there Is one where it is on a military base. From this assignment I learned about five different facilities that children can go into. This assignment also had us look at if it was used in Pennsylvania and the corresponding Pa code if one applied to it. This assignment was informative and eye opening to the different types of facilities that children can be in and the pros and cons of each one. The point of this assignment was about showing how different community, environments, and settings can shape a child’s outcome.
I enjoy each of NAEYC's standards, they each hold a special place in my heart.
Going through the course and getting my degree I learned so much about myself and how much I needed to change as a person to better understand others and their lives. Everyone is coming from a different background. Not everyone is going to have the same family or childhood. This is why Standard 2 is so important to understanding the child. Building family and community relationships is about making the child more welcomed in the classroom but it also about bettering your understanding of the world.
Their family and community are what makes them who they are as an individual. They are coming into your classroom and its up to you to make them feel welcomed by getting to understand their family and community ties. Its up to your to be the bridge between the classroom and the household. Make the family feel welcomed in the classroom and that the child has nothing to be ashamed of where they come from. Each child has the potential to be someone amazing and we are there to help them to reach their goals.
