One aspect of our district’s vision draws upon the idea that learning is the constant, and time is the variable. This maxim, perhaps, is no more important than it is for our accelerated learners. If, for example, a student requires only one school year to complete two grade levels in math, then our system has the agility to make that happen. Additionally, our district utilizes our Integrated Services Framework, which allows staff the ability to provide collaborative, targeted, and intensive interventions for our highest achievers in addition to our most struggling ones. Therefore, we do not need an isolated program, per se, for our brightest students, particularly those with high aptitudes in language arts, math, science, and social studies. After all, stand-alone “GT Programs” for identified students are often separate, divisive, misaligned, and stigmatizing. Instead, gifted services in WPS ensure that identified students’ academic needs are naturally addressed systemically and through existing offerings at WPS. Doing this successfully requires thoughtful coordination, commitment, and collaboration among educators and parents.
