MYP Service as Action

In the MYP, students are able to build authentic connections between what they learn in the classroom and what they encounter in the community through service. All MYP students are expected to engage in meaningful service activities in which they work with others in a shared commitment towards the common good. Through service as action, students should:

  • become more aware of their own strengths and areas for growth

  • undertake challenges that develop new skills

  • discuss, evaluate, and plan student-initiated activities

  • persevere in action

  • work collaboratively with others

  • develop international-mindedness through global engagement, multilingualism and intercultural understanding

  • consider ethical implications of their actions.

Students should meet these learning outcomes over the course of MYP; they are not intended to be met by every student in every service experience. After each service activity, students reflect on the experience and the learning outcome(s) experienced (MYP: From Principles into Practice May 2014: 24).

In order to encourage meaningful and authentic service, MYP students follow a leveled point system for their service experiences, rather than counting hours.
