This is the baronial award for Arts & Sciences. Originally it was suppose to be an award given to the winner of the Baronial Arts and Sciences Championship, however it was never given as a prize award. Instead, the order was for those whose work in the Arts and Sciences has greatly added to the enjoyment of the SCA in the barony. It normally is given after consulting the members of the order.
The original proposal for the token was: A 1 1/4 inch disk of copper pierced for a ribbon. An Acanthus leaf is either engraved upon the copper or cut from brass and soldered into place. It would be depending on a ribbon of Green or Gold. The final token was a green stone inscribed with an acanthus leaf in gold leaf, bound and suspended by leather. The photo of the token shown is the original token.

The Blue Bowl was originally given to the winner of a period food competition. At an early Yule Revel, the members were holding a Blue Bowl competition when someone (Viscountess Fiona von Steinhaus) urged the populace to vote for the Jamaican Bananas (there was of course no such dish entered in the contest. For several years the Jamaican Bananas contest were run instead of the Blue Bowl contest. Later, the contests were begun again at each Yule Revel and the Blue Bowl was converted to an Order. [Is this still a competition?]

This baronial award is for accomplishment in the fine and noble art of punning. This award has been looked on by some as a dubious honor at best. It is not really intended as such. In the renaissance, the pun really was considered a high art form. With this in mind, two sub-orders were added to the Bitten Tongue. The Order of the Argent Tongue will be awarded to those members of the main order whose puns are of such high quality that they are deemed worth of special notice. The Order of the Twice Bitten Tongue (Thrice, etc.) will be awarded to those whose puns make up in truly excessive quantity whatever they may lack in quality.
The token for the order is a Tongue Purpure (purple) with in base the sinister flank invected (a bite mark design taken out near the bottom) suspended from a Vert (green) ribbon.
