Description of Reinforcement System
Each day, students repeat the STAR Pledge during morning announcements. Many days, students are reminded of what their STAR expectations mean and behaviors STAR students should and should not engage.
Expectations are reinforced as needed by the teacher, school counselor, and school administrator as needed. Expectations and procedures are reviewed after school breaks and any other time neccessary.
It is expected that faculty and staff provide consistent implimentation of STAR expectations throughout campus. As such, expectations are reviewed with faculty and staff during faculty meetings and professional development.
Reinforcing Positive Behaviors
BSES faculty and staff focuses on positive behaviors by rewarding students who model STAR expectations. Students may earn Class Dojo points, paw patrol tickets, and other incentives for modeling STAR behavior. Activities and other recognitions are planned and promoted throughout the year.
Incentives for being a STAR Student include:
being chosen as Student of the Month
brag tags
earning a Sonic gift card
opportunities to earn tickets for the prize cart
name submitted for the bike and iPad give-aways
monthly celebrations, such as dances, popsicles, ice cream sundaes, and more!
The Referral Process.....Major versus Minor Violations
Minor STAR Student infractions are handled by teachers. These infractions include talking, chewing gum, littering, et. Students are asked to stop, explain to the teacher what they are doing incorrectly, and then explain what they should be doing. Teachers follow up with student by giving a warning or explaining their consequence. Students are not reprimanded on the first minor infractions but on their second or third. If minor infractions continue, students may be referred to the school counselor, positive behavior specialist, have a parent conference, or ultimately receive an office referral.
Teachers in first, third, fourth, and fifth grades track minor behaviors through the use of a daily binder system. If a student has a minor infraction, it is notated in a binder that travels with the student's class as they move throughout the day. This way, each teacher is aware of a minor issue that may have occured. Kindergarten through second grade teachers monitor their student behavior through other means such as behavior charts and Class Dojo.
Major Star Student infractions are referred to the office. These behaviors are defined in the West Jasper School District's Student Handbook. Teachers send these students to the office as soon as possible with an office referral.
The Referral Process.....Defining Major Infractions
Major discipline infractions are defined in the West Jasper School Disctict Student Handbook. Each infraction is listed with the recommended discipline step to be administered.
The Reactions...Interventions
Students who show consistent patterns of negative behaviors may be referred to the school counselor, tier 2 for behavior, and/or positive behavior therapist:
The school counselor: The school counselor speaks with students about various issues to further understand why the student is engaging in such behaviors. The school counselor uses Solution Focused Therapy strategies to help the student develop a plan of action to prevent unwanted behaviors. Often times, the school counselor will collaborate with teachers and parents as well to address the issue.
Tier 2 for behavior: If data supports placing a student in behavior tier, the teacher support team develops an intervention that addresses the behavior. For example, if a student consistently yells out in class, the team develops an intervention to address this. The school counselor and student will discuss various others ways to communicate. Teachers will provide student with a chart to keep record of their improved, positive behavior to redeem for a prize.
Positive behavior therapist: The positive behavior therapist will observe students who display negative behaviors and offer prevention strategies and/or a plan of action.
The Reactions...Consequences
If a student continues with minor and major infractions, the administrator at BSES follows the discipline step plan outlined in the West Jasper School District Student Handbook.
