While ensuring academic integrity in the online classroom presents some unique challenges, instructors should cultivate an atmosphere of academic honesty and discourage students from participating in dishonest and unethical conduct related to academic activities in the online environment. Unlike the traditional classroom, online instructors usually do not have the verbal rapport with their students. While instructors cannot see their students, they can develop an understanding of the students’ writing patterns and knowledge levels in the discussions and from their emails. However, because faculty don't see the students writing the online discussion posts, it is harder for online instructors to identify when there is an academic integrity issue in the class. In this module, we explore how to establish a culture of academic honesty and how to deal with violations of your institution's academic integrity policy.
