You must choose a mentor to assist you in the project that you have selected. There are guidelines that must be followed when selecting your mentor. Your mentor should be a member of the community or nearby community who has professional expertise or considerable knowledge or experience in the field of study you have been approved to explore. Mentors must be at least age 21 and cannot be immediate family; i.e., mother, father, sister, brother. Students are encouraged to use adults in the community rather than faculty members from WHS as mentors since they will be serving as judges during the oral presentations in May. Retired teachers and teachers from other schools in the district may be considered as mentors. Parents and/or guardians must give consent and approval for the mentor chosen by his/her son or daughter.
Your mentor must be a person who is:
willing to work with a student
willing to provide knowledge, guidance, instruction, support and expertise in the project to promote further understanding for the student
willing to meet with the student and work on their project and to confirm these hours
willing to help the student confront technical aspects of the project
willing to counsel students concerning potential ethical issues in relation to the project
willing to encourage the student to achieve his/her maximum learning potential
willing to verify the completion of the product by the student and to write a letter of recommendation for the student regarding his/her performance or complete the Mentor Final Evaluation Form of the student.
In working with a mentor, the student must:
complete the mentor Google Form before beginning your fieldwork
develop a plan for your fieldwork with your mentor and discuss it so that you are sure that your project is both challenging and achievable
be willing to accept the mentor’s advice and guidance
stay in contact with your mentor throughout the project
complete your time log regarding your fieldwork and have your mentor initial each entry (Logs must be included as part of the Senior Exhibition Project Journal.
