Dear Families,
We've been hard at work here in fourth grade! During literacy we are working on analyzing the elements of poetry, including structure, sensory language, rhyme, repetition, and meter. We have read a variety of poems and analyzed them for their elements, including poetry by Robert Frost, William Carlos Williams, and Valerie Worth. We have also been reading our chapter book, Love That Dog, and analyzing how the main character Jack changes and grows over time. We are learning that poets like Jack find inspiration from other poets. Here you can see students working to analyze and write about poetry.
During math, we have begun work on fractions. We are reviewing third grade content, including naming and generating fractions as well as comparing fractions. At this point, students should feel confident understanding which fraction is larger when given two fractions with the same numerator (e.g. 1/2 and 1/8) as well as when two fractions have the same denominator (e.g. 2/4 and 6/4).
In genius hour we have learned about the 6 simple machines. We explored how simple machines are everywhere. In this picture, you can see two students examining a kitchen tool to figure out which simple machines it uses. We also examined how levers make it easier to lift heavy loads. I challenged the class to lift me up with a large lever. In this pictures below you can see students experimenting with moving the fulcrum to lift two students at once.
We are continuing our Wabanaki Studies, with some upcoming field trips scheduled in October. We are learning about Wabanaki both in the past and present. We also continued working on spelling words with the 6 syllable types.
