Class Update

Dear Families, 

Our classroom routines are beginning to take shape and learning is in full swing!  This week we began our literacy module by looking at some of the authors and content we will be discovering this fall.  Throughout the course of our module we will  investigate how poets find inspiration in the natural world, family, culture, history, and identity. Through a study of the Wabanaki Nations of Maine, we will learn about how stories, traditions, and connection to place inspire artistic expression. We will be analyzing poems, oral traditions, songs, and stories, and finally crafting our own poetry that reflects our understanding of how poets find inspiration for their work.

This week we began learning about elements of poetry.  We learned about sensory language and did some sensory writing by observing nature outside our school.  We also analyzed a poem by William Carlos Williams and unpacked the ideas of stanzas and lines. 

In math, we learned about factors, multiples, prime and composite numbers.  We found the area of rectangles to determine all the possible factors of a number. Above you can see students sharing their factor posters in a gallery walk.  We are continuing to work on memorizing our 2s, 3s, 4s, and 5s.  Thanks for your help practicing them at home! 

During genius hour this week we learned about the power of making mistakes in helping our brains grow.  I challenged the class to make a paper tower using just two pieces of paper that could hold the weight of two heavy text books.  It took a lot of trial and error before finding some towers that were successful.  Above you can see some examples of groups solving the challenge!
