What is Newsela?

Newsela takes real world content from trusted sources and makes it instruction ready for ELA, social studies, and science classrooms. Texts are published at five reading levels, so content can be both challenging to and supportive of every learner. 


How do I log in?

Newsela is available through your Canvas class page.

To log in:  

1) Login to Canvas 

2) Open a published class in Canvas 

3) Click the Newsela link in the course navigation menu on the left side of the screen

4) This will open a new tab, so make sure your pop-ups aren’t blocked 

5)  Select K-12 Teacher and verify your e-mail if prompted

6) Select your school and continue to the Newsela site to view material







How do I embed a NewsELA assignment into Canvas?

1) In Canvas, navigate to assignments and create a new assignment


2) Under Submission Type, choose External Tool and click Find Select Newsela and choose a created assignment 

3) Select Newsela and choose a created assignment 


4) Click Embed Assignment then click "Select" in Canvas.

Frequently Asked Questions

Missing Classes in Newsela?

First, make sure you are logging in from Canvas - in order for Canvas classes to sync, you need to login directly from Canvas. Then, make sure the course is not archived. Under settings in Newsela, check your Archived courses tab. If it is there, you can restore any courses. 

My class is missing students 

Check the course in Canvas to make sure the student is present. If a student is not present, work with your admin to get the student added in Canvas. Then, resync the class in Newsela. 

Students cannot see my class or assignments in Newsela 

Make sure the student is always logging into and accessing Newsela through Canvas. Teachers and students need to use the same login method to correctly roster students and assign content.
