Stepping Stone #1: What tools can I use to determine meaning of an unknown word?

- Open the worksheet to the right and make a copy.
Watch the video below the worksheet called "Inference Video." As you watch, complete the worksheet you made a copy of in the previous step.
- After completing the note-catcher read the poem "For My People" that is linked on the worksheet.
- After you have read the poem continue to finish the remainder of the worksheet which asks you to find and define unknown words from the "For My People" poem.
- Once you have completed the worksheet turn this in through Slate.
Stepping stone 2: How do I determine the main idea of a text?

Step 1: Open and make a copy of the worksheet to the right.
Step 2: Watch the video to the right titled "Central Idea Power Point". As you watch complete the worksheet you opened in the previous step.
Step 2: As you continue to work on the worksheet you will use the skills from the video to create a better understanding of the poem "For My People" from the previous assignment.
Step 3: Submit to Slate once completed

Before moving onto the next Milestone complete the following steps:
Open the Competency Dashboard in Slate.
Get your ELA credit slip.
Using the scores in the Competency Dashboard to fill in your credit slip.
Conference with your teacher about your score and how that translates into a percentage.
If you are happy with your grade move onto the next Milestone. If you are unhappy revise a Performance task and resubmit. Once you are satisfied with your grade move onto the next Milestone.
