Lincoln is using the Zones of Regulation curriculum to give staff and students common language around identifying and regulating emotions (and other important skills). You can check out the curriculum and other resources here.
What are the Zones?
The four Zones are used to describe what we feel on the inside (emotions, level of alertness, or energy level). All emotions are OK! Our behaviors often stem from our feelings. If we stay in a strong emotion for a long time, left unchecked, we can get ourselves into trouble when our bodies, attitude, or words negatively impact others. For example, it's OK to be mad, but it's not OK to be mean.
We are learning about regulation tools/strategies to use in order to help ourselves regulate or get balanced. This increased self-awareness allows us to experience our emotions and helps us know when we need to get regulated in order to be able to do our best to get along with others and do our best learning.
If you are dysregulated or imbalanced you need to use a tool/strategy to get yourself get more regulated/balanced. When we are regulated we can do our best: we are ready to learn, are focused, make better decisions & have a better chance of staying out of trouble. When we are dysregulated we are unfocused, may be experiencing strong emotions, and thus can't do our best (in that moment). If we don't pause to use our tools to get regulated we may end up in trouble or letting our friends down.
Remember, all our emotions are OK.
Here are some classroom examples of "The Road to Regulation" and the tools (cards) we practiced using to get regulated.
