Certainly, there are students at a young age who are struggling with depression and anxiety. Results from the 2017 Healthy Youth Survey for Wenatchee School District's 6th grade students reveal the following results which are slightly higher than the State average:
Have you ever seriously thought about killing yourself? 16.4% indicated Yes.
Have you ever tried to kill yourself? 6.1% indicated Yes.
When you feel sad or hopeless, are there adults that you can turn to for help? While 22% said they never feel sad or hopeless, 21.8% indicated that they didn't have, or didn't know if they had, a safe adult to turn to for help.
These are concerning statistics represent real-life WSD 6th grade students. We want to make sure that ALL students have an understanding of depression and anxiety. We want everyone to have coping skills to help get regulated when life gets challenging or darn right hard. We want students to be able to help themselves and fellow students get help. We want each and every student to be able to identify specific safe adults to talk with to get help for themselves and their peers. Check out the 5th-grade miniseries below.
