We had such a fantastic time at Root Connections, we went into the woods, made pictures out of the natural resources we found and picked vegetables!

Term 5 Week 1
Welcome back!
This week in Starlings we have started our new topic about plants.
We have been thinking about what we would put in an adventure story. We came up with adjectives to describe our setting and used AI to create images from our ideas.
In maths we have been thinking about counting in 2s and 10s.
In science we have been learning the names of the different parts of plants.
We will be making smoothies this term in DT so we looked closely at some fruits and vegetables to see which had seeds inside so that they were fruits.
In PE we are learning about using a target so we carefully threw beanbags to eachother trying to throw them just the right distance.
Term 4
Term 4 Week 3 & 4
A fabulous fortnight has been had by our year ones.
We have been thinking about how we use the personal pronoun 'I' and have been working hard to plan a retelling of Zog and the Flying Doctors imagining that we are Zog.
In maths we have been learning about volume and capacity and have been comparing different volumes.
We have learned about the changing seasons and what happens in springtime.
STEM week was great fun. The pop up planetarium was fascinating. We got to visit the International Space Station!!
All topped off with a sea of red clothes to raise money for good causes.
Term 4 Week 2
We have really enjoyed the sunshine this week. As part of RE and learning about Easter we have been looking for signs of new life and spring outside.
In maths we have been measuring using objects and then using centimetres. We are great at using a ruler to measure now!
This week we wrote get well soon letters to Mrs Taylor and we also wrote our own narratives continuing the story of the Jolly Postman
We had a great world book day and enjoyed dressing up as characters and adjectives. Miss Plaskitt came and read us some stories too!
Term 3
Children's Mental Health Week
Our week has been full of toast, well being activities and outdoor adventures!
This week we have written biographies about Michael Rosen after we went on a bear hunt outside.
Term 3 Week 3
We have been learning about non fiction texts this week and enjoyed learning about different animals from fact books we found in the library.
We have continued learning about the history of communication and looked at interesting telephones.
We have also been learning the countries that make up the UK and we need some more practice on this, so I wonder if you could talk about it at home.
In maths we have been using number lines to 20 and we learnt a new maths vocabulary word 'estimate'#
In computing we have been programming beebots which is great fun!
Term 3 Week 1
Welcome back and happy new year to all of Staring Class children and families. Check out the Learning in Year 1 page to see what we will be learning this term
This week we have learned how to use base 10 to numbers bigger than 10. We have been improving our writin by saying our sentences out loud before writing them. In science we talked about pets and were able to identify different pets from clues. In art we began learning about sculptures by rolling paper to create structures.

End of Term 2
To end the term we have enjoyed writing some winter poetry.
We had a lovely festive walk to the library to top off a brilliant term full of lots of hard work
We have loved all of our Christmas events, the school fayre, Christmas lunch, performing in the show and wearing our Christmas jumpers.

Term 2 Week 3
This week we have been planning and writing character descriptions. We have used adjectives and tried very hard to use capital letter and full stops in our writing.
In maths we have been identifying 2d and 3d shapes and we made repeating patterns using only circles and triangles.
In geography we learnt that in the United Kingdom we have a temperate climate.
In computing this week we used a paint programme to create self portraits.
Term 2 Week 2
Another jam packed week, topped off with our Children in Need ramble to Radstock Park and back. All the children were fantastic and showed our school rules of be safe, be kind and be your best!
Term 2 Week 1
This week in English we have been reading the book Dogger. Mrs Blackmore's favourite toy Draco the dinosaur has also gone missing and we have been writing description using adjectives to help her find him.
Our maths learning has focused on using addition and subtraction.
In phonics we began learning our phase 5 sounds.
In Science we focused on seasonal change this week, we went on an autumn walk and drew our observations.
We continued learning about the weather in Geography and we compared the weather in Welton to the weather in the Isle of Coll in Scotland.

This week in English we have been learning about what makes a sentence and have been using capital letters, full stops nouns and verbs.
Our maths learning has focused on number sentences and using the plus and equals to.
In phonics we are revising our phase 4 sounds. This week we have been adding the prefix 'un' to adjectives and verbs
In art we have been making shape art using different mediums.
As scientists this week we explored our sense of touch with our hands and feet.

This week in English we planned and wrote our first story based on our book Ivy and the Rain cloud. We chose a type of weather, an emotion and a child character and we wrote about how the weather helped the child.
Our maths learning has focused on finding more and less and being able to count backwards. We went outside to find "one less than..." objects.
In phonics we are revising our phase 4 sounds. This week we have been adding 'er' and 'ed' to verbs.
In art we thought about wavy lines. We made a class piece of art where our wavy lines joined each other and we turned them into ocean waves, all while listening to the sound of the ocean.
We were scientists this week, identifying the sounds we could hear on our school grounds.
Term 1 Week 2
We have had a full on week of learning. We are getting used to our new routines and working in different rooms. It has been great to start learning new topics in all of our subjects.
In English we have read Ivy and the Rain Cloud and have been thinking about how the characters are feeling.
In phonics we are revising our phase 4 sounds. This week we have been adding 'ing' to verbs.
We have been great mathematicians this week, counting backwards, recognising number words and counting on from any number.
In art we thought about lines. We used string to make interesting designs and then copied them using chalk.
Term 1 Week 1
We have started year 1 with a bang! We had the very important job of supporting the new members of our class, showing them where to put their coats and playing with them at break times.
In English we have been writing postcards to Mr Snell to tell him about our summers, our focus has been to use capital letters at the start of our sentences.
In phonics we are revising our phase 4 sounds. This week we have been added 's' and 'es' to nouns to turn them into plurals.
We have been sorting objects and counting from a group of objects in Maths.
We drew self portraits and compared them to our very first self portrait a year ago.
In PE we tried out hurdling using our shoes as the hurdles!
