Reading and Phonics
In Starling class, we do daily phonics where we work on being able to segment, blend and read words. Each lesson has a different focus which helps support your child to read. Throughout the term, your children will be reading a range of sharing books in class, discussing the importance of reading and sharing ideas. Our aim is to encourage all children to love reading.
Alongside this, they will come home with books to support their phonics knowledge. The children should be able to read these with a high level of fluency, only needing to sound out occasional words. We will aim to change children's books once they have read it several times.
They will also be working on common exception words - those words you just have to know. We encourage children to practise reading and writing these to develop their reading fluency and writing confidence.
Thank you for your support in this.
Writing:
In all of our writing in class we are focusing on presentation, speed and accuracy so that we can be fluent and accurate writers.
Handwriting
In Year 1 we teach printed (no joins) letter formation.
Maths
In our daily maths lessons, we incorporate some recall (remembering) of previous skills and knowledge in our Flashback 4 - these also include a challenge for those that finish quickly so that they are having to apply other learning or make links in their learning. In lessons we use the Concrete, Pictorial and Abstract approach to enable the children to use practical resources to show their learning as well as to try out new skills in practical ways - i,e using dienes/counters/place value cards/numberlines etc.
Please see below for our Y1 targets that we need to master by the end of the year. We also include opportunities to revisit previous years learning! Supporting your children to do Doodle Maths at home, counting to 10 or even sorting objects are great ways to help develop your child's fluency in mathematical concepts.
